About Hefta Group, Inc.

Hefta Group, Inc.  brings extensive experience to both produced water and industrial water stream management.  Hefta Group, Inc. is a Veteran owned business.

Mark Hefta’s background includes more than 30 years in water supply development, treatment system design, and produced water reuse,  including work on produced water disposal planning, recycling strategies, and water supply integration.

Laura Hefta's legal and strategic expertise adds a critical dimension, helping clients navigate regulatory frameworks, permitting pathways, and long‑range planning with clarity and discipline.

By combining these perspectives, Hefta Group helps clients address two issues that are often considered separately: water supply development and industrial/produced water management.

In many western basins, these challenges are increasingly interconnected. The ability to evaluate produced water and industrial wastewater as part of a broader water portfolio—rather than as isolated problems—creates opportunities for more resilient, cost‑effective, and sustainable water strategies.

Engineers in safety vests discuss blueprints on a table.

Every organization’s water needs are shaped by its location, regulatory environment, operational requirements, and long‑term goals. Hefta Group works with clients to develop tailored water strategies that align these factors into a clear, actionable plan.

Our approach includes assessing current and future water demands, evaluating available supply options, identifying opportunities for diversification, and determining treatment and conveyance pathways that meet quality and regulatory requirements. We also examine where reuse can strengthen supply reliability and reduce freshwater demand.

The result is a practical, defensible strategy that supports infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, and long‑term operational resilience. Our team specializes in civil engineering design, providing innovative solutions for a variety of projects including water treatment solutions, wastewater treatment, water and sewer lines, water supply, landfills, and other heavy construction projects.

Produced Water Management

Produced water is a naturally occurring water stream brought to the surface during oil and gas development. It originates from deep geological formations and often contains a complex mixture of dissolved salts, hydrocarbons, minerals, metals, and other constituents. Its composition varies significantly across different basins and formations—ranging from relatively moderate salinity to extremely high‑TDS brines. Because of this variability, produced water requires careful characterization and basin‑specific treatment planning.

For decades, produced water was managed primarily as a waste stream, with disposal wells serving as the default solution. Water resiliency coupled with wew research and technologies are changing this perspective: produced water can be a valuable water resource when treated appropriately. Recycled produced water can reduce freshwater demand in oil and gas operations, support industrial reuse, and—where regulations allow—be applied in other sectors. In some basins, the dissolved constituents may even represent future opportunities for mineral recovery, including rare earth elements and other critical materials.

Industrial water streams share many of the same challenges. Manufacturing, energy production, food processing, and other sectors generate complex wastewater streams that require treatment to meet regulatory standards or to enable reuse. These streams often contain variable loads of organics, solids, nutrients, or industrial byproducts. Like produced water, they benefit from a fit‑for‑purpose treatment approach that aligns water quality goals with operational needs.

Across the American West, water systems face increasing pressure from population growth, climate variability, aging infrastructure, and competing demands across municipal, industrial, agricultural, and environmental sectors. The new reality of the American West is that long‑term water security depends on resilient, diversified, and adaptable water supplies.

Hefta Group supports organizations in developing water portfolios that can withstand uncertainty. This includes evaluating new supply opportunities, strengthening and protecting existing water sources, integrating conservation and efficiency, and expanding reuse where appropriate. We emphasize measured, technically grounded approaches that improve reliability without over‑promising or oversimplifying the challenges ahead.

Turning strategy into implementation requires disciplined project development and management. Hefta Group supports clients through the full lifecycle of water initiatives, ensuring that technical, regulatory, and operational elements remain aligned from concept through execution.

Our project approach emphasizes clarity, coordination, and adaptability. We translate strategic goals into structured project frameworks, guide multidisciplinary teams, and manage delivery with a focus on quality, risk mitigation, and long‑term performance. This ensures that water solutions are not only well‑planned but also well‑executedWe offer comprehensive operation of water and wastewater treatment facilities, alongside effective monitoring and sampling solutions.  We offer comprehensive strategic planning services and budgeting for your project, ensuring effective civil engineering design.
